Granted, "relatively dark" for a Las Vegas resident means pretty much anywhere.

I admit that I didn't put a ton of effort into this one. I tried to get a decent composition at 16mm. (With no mobile reception, I'm glad I once learned how to find the north star with reasonable accuracy). I set my camera for 30-second exposures at f/2.8 and ISO 6400. Then I just locked up my cable release and let it shoot continuously. After a little more than an hour, I packed up and went to bed.

It wasn't until I checked the resulting photos today that I would know whether or not I got anything worth posting. I've used software in the past from startrails.de, but I decided to try something new today called StarStaX. Of course, I did some cleanup in Photoshop and adjusted the foreground exposure to my liking.
As a general rule, dogs aren't allowed on national park trails, but there are plenty of paved and developed areas you can take your pet within the Yosemite valley.
At the time, I was doing a "100 Days of Macro" project and was focusing on very small subjects.

The General Sherman Tree is, obviously, the exact opposite. By trunk volume, it is the largest tree in the world. The conditions were super foggy during our visit, but that just adds to the magic of the atmosphere.
This place is absolutely amazing. We had previously stayed at the South Coast Winery and fully enjoyed it, but Europa Village is completely next level. I highly recommend checking out this Temecula Bed and Breakfast.
Unfortunately, this tree blocks your view of the actual sunset. It's still a great room with a fantastic view.

Although I am a consistent "America the Beautiful" annual pass owner, Great Smoky Mountains is one of the few national parks that does not charge an entrance fee. The reason is tied to Newfound Gap Road. When the privately owned land and road were turned over to the government, the agreement was that there would never be a toll to travel the road. An entrance fee would essentially be a toll.

Though pure coincidence, it was a great way to celebrate Earth Day. Sure it was a little rainy, but what desert dweller doesn't enjoy the rain? The downside is that our view from the top of Clingmans Dome was nothing but a foggy forest, which was beautiful in its own way. Luckily there were many spots along the side of the road to capture some nice stream photos.

Our short sojourn was nowhere near enough time to fully appreciate what Great Smoky Mountains has to offer. We'll definitely need to return during a future trip.Paolo DLRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06908585885898605686noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5536241215108392300.post-25293641765759480702016-05-14T18:54:00.000-07:002016-05-14T18:54:57.039-07:00Play-Doh Henge (Seven Magic Mountains)When I heard about this art installation just outside the Las Vegas valley, I was immediately reminded of an old Eddie Izzard comedy routine. Except in this case, they've built a Play-Doh Henge! Named "Seven Magic Mountains" by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, it's a strange sight in the middle of the desert, but well worth the short drive.

This was a last minute photo decision. The clouds I saw while driving home on Friday night looked like they would lend themselves to an awesome sunset. Unfortunately, this was no longer the case once I arrived, but I captured what I could.
Jieun had to work, but that didn't prevent me from partaking in the pleasantly pretentious tea sipping shenanigans. (Clearly, I enjoy alliteration way too much).

I arrived early and seized the opportunity to snap some shots of their impressive setup. We would end up sampling ten teas that afternoon—a collection of white, green, yellow, oolong, and red (otherwise known as black).

All guests had their own labeled double-walled vessel. Putting that labeler to good use for sure.

At first I thought David had created his own tea bag labels. David's Tea turns out to be a Canadian specialty tea company from Montreal.

If you haven't Googled by now, "ultracrepidarianism" is the habit of giving opinions or advice on matters outside of one's knowledge. Luckily, we had some reference material.

A few of the teas had food pairing, but we also had excellent snack options in front of us.

A closer look at one of the teas—Jasmine Phoenix Eyes white tea if I'm not mistaken. It turns out that all tea comes from the same plant. The end product depends on how it is processed.
So I'm doing a quick post in hopes of kickstarting this thing back into gear.

This photo is from our camping trip last October. I made it a point to visit the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, primarily to photograph this pier. It's not original by any stretch, but always a fun subject to capture.
I was sticking to a strict one-photo-per-day rule, so I figured I'd go through the scraps and post a few that missed the cut. Unsurprisingly, it's mostly flowers.

And when it comes to flowers, it's tough to beat the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens as showcased by the following three images.

The next shot is from Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. With all the gigantic trees surrounding us, this project had me accustomed to looking for the minute details in nature.

The next four photos are from hiking in the Red Rock area west of Las Vegas. Even in the desert, there is some wonderful color to be found.
Finally, here are a couple of scraps from around the neighborhood. With this next image, I was trying to capture the flower in a more abstract way (which inspired a different shot on a later day). The final image is another angle on a dandelion that did make it into the 100.

What begins with Bawoo ends with Bawoo. If nothing else, this photo shows that my first one wasn't really a macro.

I think this was tougher than my original 10-month project. For one thing, it's tougher sticking to a specific style (macros). Second, I managed to take and post all 100 on the same day.

Feels good to be done.
Especially at this point in the project, it's nice when you don't have to try too hard. The discoloration in this neighbor's bush caught my attention. The contrast was interesting from afar and it turns out to be pretty interesting up close.

One to go!
I was at the new Mothership Coffee Roasters in the Green Valley area and decided to make the extra hop and skip over to Ethel M to squeeze in one more macro from their cactus garden.

Jieun made some killer Galbi Jjim tonight and it was most definitely macro-worthy. She asked the guy at Greenland Supermarket for good quality and he did not disappoint. Big chunky beef short ribs that weren't cheap but totally worth it. And Bawoo appreciates having bones to chew on for days.
Well, my car was clean for about a week. I wanted to get some water droplet shots after today's downpour. These flowers behind my parking spot at work were the easiest subjects available.
One more coffee-related post before this project ends. Photographing latte art is not so easy, as it turns out. I discovered that angling the flash so that the micro bubbles are somewhat backlit works the best.

I purchased this 100% authentic Gucci belt at Namdaemun Market in Korea for 20,000 KRW. OK so that's only about 20 USD. In any case, it's an awesome belt.

I'm on the home stretch of this project and running dangerously low on ideas. Good thing there's the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. I could source a couple of week's worth from their displays. Like last time I visited, I walked away with a few nice shots, but I like this one the most.

I've always loved beetroot, but I've never tried preparing it from scratch. It's cheap and you can do something with the greens as well, but I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. I'll just buy the ones from Costco.
Like my guitar from a couple of days ago, here's another object I haven't touched in a few years. I'd love to get out onto a tennis court again, but my knees might say otherwise.

I like the name of this plant. Thanks to Mountain's Edge Regional Park for its helpful signage. The wind wasn't helpful, however, so I grabbed a couple of fallen flowers and took this photo at home. That allowed me to play around with some freehand fill flash to illuminate the interior and get something a bit more abstract.
I haven't touched this guitar in many years. In fact, the last time was probably to photograph it for my original project. Old strings. Dusty. But it cleaned up well enough for today's macro.
I haven't resorted to as much food photography during this project as I thought I would. We ended up eating at 808 Sushi with my cousin. The food, much like this image, was OK.
After dragon boat paddling this morning, I took a little detour through the new Cadence community and saw some cactus along the side of the road. When I don't mess it up, this lens can really produce some tack sharp images.
It's been a few years since I've seen any bugs in the house, so this centipede was a big surprise. Not the greatest photo, but it's late and I don't have much else to show for today.
